Local firefighters, EMTs and police officers — plus their gear — will be in the spotlight at our 19th annual Community Heroes Day Thursday, Sept. 5, from 6-8 p.m. That’s when the library parking lot will fill up with fire trucks, ambulances and police cars so anyone — young and old alike — can get up close, ask questions, and explore.

How long do the oxygen tanks last during a fire? What’s in the back of an ambulance? What’s it like to be a female firefighter in a field traditionally dominated by men? Any and all questions are welcome!

There will also be great handouts and giveaways to help keep your family safe, create disaster plans, and be prepared in case of an emergency.

“It’s the most important community event we do each year,” says Miss Sue, youth services librarian. “It’s a great way for children to get familiar with first responders and emergency equipment — without the emergency — and it’s a good springboard for talking about what to do if there is an emergency and make a plan as a family.”

Community Heroes Day was created after the 9/11 terrorist attacks to reassure children that there were still firefighters and police officers to protect them. It’s been held every September ever since.

“Kids get to climb on the fire trucks, try on the uniforms, and check out the back of an ambulance, and the first responders love sharing their knowledge and meeting residents,” adds Miss Sue. “Others come out to thank the people who respond to 911 calls and put their lives on the line. It’s a fun evening for everyone.”

First responders from the Emmaus Fire and Police Departments, as well as the Emmaus Ambulance Corps and the Vera Cruz Fire Company in Upper Milford will be on hand — so come out and show them some love for all they do to keep us safe!

Please note that our parking lot will be blocked off at 5 p.m. to accommodate the emergency vehicles. The rain date is Sept. 12.
