Hard to believe, but tax season is here again already, and tax reform means ‘hello’ to a shorter, redesigned 1040 form this year (and ‘goodbye’ to forms 1040A and 1040EZ). The IRS will begin accepting returns on Jan. 29, so if you’re ready to get started, here’s where you can get tax forms and assistance, including at the library …

AARP ASSISTANCE

AARP offers free, individualized tax preparation for low-to-moderate-income taxpayers — especially those 50 and older — at nearly 5,000 locations nationwide. You can find the location nearest you and information about what to bring with you on their website.

The location offering AARP assistance closest to the library is:

EMMAUS MORAVIAN CHURCH
146 Main St.
Emmaus, PA 18049
Phone: 610-965-6067

From their newsletter: “AARP will again be helping with tax preparation. The first day that you can sign up is Tuesday, Jan. 29. They will be here to prepare taxes from Tuesday, Feb. 5 until April 9. They will be in the church from 9-12. You must come in and sign up — the secretary does not make appointments. Thank you!”

AT THE LIBRARY

The library has a display with a limited number of federal forms and some state tax forms and instruction booklets. Feel free to stop by and pick up what you need for personal use. You may also use the library’s PCs to download or print forms, or ask library staff for assistance with printing forms. Printing is .20 per page for black and white, and .50 per page for color.

To reduce costs and environmental impact, the PA Department of Revenue has phased out bulk shipments of tax forms, but we’ve received forms from Rep. Justin Simmons’ office and Sen. Lisa Boscola’s mobile office, which has a representative on hand at the library every Monday (except on federal holidays) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (or 1:45 p.m. on the last Monday of the month).

Rep. Simmons’ office also accepts appointments if you have questions or other concerns:

191 Main St., Suite 104
Emmaus, PA 18049
Phone: 610-965-5830

Of course, you’re welcome to come into the library and use our public-access computers, printers and copier to print or copy forms and/or work on your tax return with a hot cup of coffee from our new beverage station.

Happy filing!
