Your books and movies are due today, but you only have a few more pages to go in that thriller…or your children can’t find one of their books. You need a little extra time to look for it.

No worries. Just renew the items online by 11:59 p.m. and save yourself a trip to the library. While most items are available for autorenewal, you can login to your account and double check the status or renew ahead of the due date. It’s very easy:

  • First, log on to your online account and display the list of items you have checked out. If you’re not sure how to do that, start with this earlier post. Your list will show the due dates and number of renewals left. You can click on any column header to re-sort your items, for example by due date, title or author. In our example below, once item is due on 1/29/2022 and several items are due in February. Most have at least one renewal available, but My Life has none because it’s already been renewed twice. With a few exceptions — listed at the bottom of this post — you can renew items twice before you have to return them so they can become available to other patrons.

  • Next, check the boxes next to the items you want to renew (below, left; click to enlarge). If you want to renew ALL of the items, check the box at the top to select them all at once. In this case, we’ll just renew the items that are due in the same week. If a box is ‘grayed out’ (like My Life), you will not be able to renew that item.
  • With your items selected, click on the yellow ‘Go’ box next to ‘Renew Selected Items’.
  • After you confirm that you do want to renew the items, you’ll see the new due dates — which vary by item type — and you’ll also see that those items have only one renewal left now.

If any of your renewals did not go through, it may be for one of these reasons:

  • The item is on hold by another patron
  • The item has already been renewed once
  • Your card is expired
  • The item is an Inter-Library Loan (on loan from another library)
  • The  item is one that doesn’t allow renewals, such as a Juvenile Holiday book, a museum pass, USB drive, etc.
  • You (or someone linked to your account, such as a family member) owe $5 or more in fines
  • You (or someone linked to your account) have 10 or more overdue items

In these instances, you will either need to return the item(s) or come in to update an expired card, clear up your account, etc., so that your items can be renewed if eligible.

If you don’t have access to your online account, you can also renew items over the phone by calling 610-965-2272 or 610-965-9284 during library hours. Be sure to have your library card number handy.

Next time, we’ll go over how to put items on hold so you can jump right on those new additions as soon as they hit our shelves!
